Actually my research area is fault diagnosis of beams. So I want test the modal analysis of cracked composite beam. So, how can I create crack over composite beams?
I think I have done the similar problem like what you have stated. Herewith I've attached ppt which contains exercise problem done for isotropic material but concept same for composite also.Try it out.....
Cohesive zone modelling approach in Abaqus or Ansys can be used to model crack initiation and propagation. You will need normal and shear strengths for the crack initiation and fracture toughness values in Mode I and II for crack propagation. The crack path should be pre-defined and then meshed with cohesive zone elements either in 3D or 2D formulation such COH3D8 or COH2D4 depending on your modelling approach. You can find further details in the Help and Tutorials of Abaqus regrading cohesive zone elements..
You should try Ansys cohesive zone model for crack propagation. THere are 2 ways. The first one is to create a solid mesh and put cohesive elements (inter) between the elements with zero thickness. This can be used when you already know where the crack is going to propagate. The second one is to create a mesh with solid elements and then with the emodif convert them to cohesive elements. This can be used in the case you don't know where the crack is going to propagate. Hope it works in your case. Watch out about the exponential or bi-linear behavior of the c.elements
