I am designing optical ring resonator based biosensor. So by calculating amount of power coupled in wave-guide, I can sense defect or impurity in the material. I am attaching a paper on which I am working if you want to suggest different tool to implement this problem please tell me.

I think you need to use Comsol RF module in order to accomplish this. It does not do FDTD but rather FDFD: time :-> frequency. But it is essentially the same concept.
A couple of our papers published from Cahoon's group at UNC Chapel Hill. We use the RF module to investigate the EM wave and silicon nanowire TE and TM mode relationship. You have to be careful about the port assignment and PML (perfectly matched layer) because different COMSOL version allows different PML assignment.
Please to paper with the different system of equations for modeling of straight and bend waveguide and how to use the results for optimization of ring or racetrack resonators.

I'm just curious, how does this compare in terms of useability to Lumerical MODE solutions? I am not affiliated with Lumerical or Comsol, just generally curious about these waveguide design softwares that I can't afford...
