Many a times 'head-count' statistics, published by different states (and Government agencies) on animal-resources are grossly doubted and criticized. For example, total tigers of a country, total migratory birds (of this season), number of fishes in a large lake, ..etc. are often done (counted/ estimated) by use of some known 'statistical methods' (like sample-survey). Sometimes it is done as a non-serious/ formality, by some inexperienced staff of the unconcerned departments. But, even for serious attempts/ endeavours, (the estimated) 'total'-statistics are sometimes doubted/ criticized.

Can anyone please contribute on the:

1. Best practices, adopted across different countries (on methods & case studies);

2. Latest research on 'how to have effective counting of 'a very very large population', with lesser effort.
