Some publications use microglia cells such as BV2 to investigate its role in autophagy and Amyloid beta clearance, while others use neuroblastoma cell line like N2a and SH-SY5Y. I wonder if I would like to investigate autophagy process in AD cell model, which cell line should I use?
It depends. BV2 is a cell line for microlgia, while N2a and Sy5y are cell lines used for modeling neurons. Which one you should choose depends on which cell type (neurons or microglia) you want to investigate in your study. In addtion to using these cell lines, you can also use primary cultured cells or cells derived from stem cell (or iPSC).

You first need to decide which cells you are interested in studying. You can study autophagy in neurons, astrocytes as well as microglia. For neurons you can use SHSY5Y , PC12, N2A for Microglia you may use BV2 or N9 cells. Apart from these you can always utilise the primary cells for research purpose.

The advantage is it can differentiate into neurons, astroytes or as mixed culture.
