Hello, everyone. I am choosing a sonicator for lysing virus-infected Vero cells (to extract viruses) and resuspend virus pellets. As far as I know, there are two kinds of sonicators, probe sonicators and water bath sonicators. Since contamination is a major concern, I prefer water bath sonicators. I wonder whether I can buy the sonicators designed for cleaning purpose (they are much more cheaper than lab ones). What's your experience?
Sonicators used for cleaning jewelry aren't very powerful. If you don't want to use a probe sonicator, consider a cup horn sonicator. It's a very wide, upside-down probe sonicator with a container for water attached to it. You can use this to sonicate your sample in a sealed container.
@shujin I think you can use water bath sonicator as it useful as economic too.
The main difference is the power that could be applied by these two methods. in prob base sonicators you can adjust the power on various values (mostly from 50 to 400 W). while in water bath sonicators specifically, those prepared for cleaning porpuses, you don't have this option and only a single weak power (mostly 50 W) could be applied which might do not meet your need for sonication.
