Ulcer index

The number of ulcers was counted by using the magnifying glass. Severity scores: normal coloration as 0, red coloration 0.5, spot ulcer 1.0, hemorrhagic stress 1.5, deep ulcer 2.0 and perforations as 3.0.

Ulcer index = (UN + US+ UP) x 10 rais to power -1

UN = Average of number of ulcer per animal

US = Average of severity score

UP = Percentage of animal with ulcer

Ulcer index was calculated using the following method

Ulcer index = 10/x

Where x = Total mucosal area / Total area of mucosal lesions

I feel Ulcer index is an unscientific method and is subjected to blinding of data, I prefer comparison of the ulcer area with a image processing software like ImageJ. Close comparisons could further be described on the basis of macroscopic & microscopic observations.

If you are trying to prove that the extracts have a protective effect on the mucose ulcers, maybe you should do that, with no mathematical correlations, since a proportion requires a linear correlation. I am not a mathematics expert, but I do know that the pharmacological efect of plant extracts rarely  gives a linear correlation, good enough to establish an "index" other tan "selectivity index".

An index implies an either directly proportional, or inversely proportional concept which Is very hard to get in biological systems.

please ,, do you know the criteria of ulcer in rats ??

is it depends on just ulceration in the mucosa or extend to the submucosa and muscles ??

what is the significance of 10 raise to the power 1? Is it a area of ulcer or anything else?
