I wanted to know how to calculate the solar intensity and what all parameters do we need to get. If any instrument is there for calculating solar intensity ? At what time will be the intensity of sunlight more and how to check it in India ( Chennai).
Amrutha Sukumaran A number of devices and methods may be used to calculate solar intensity, commonly known as solar irradiance. Among the most frequent approaches are:
1. A pyranometer is a device that measures the total quantity of solar radiation that a surface receives. It is capable of measuring both direct and diffuse solar energy.
2. A solarimeter is a device that monitors the amount of direct solar radiation received by a surface. It is generally made of a sensor and a display that displays the intensity of the radiation in watts per square meter (W/m2).
3. Satellite measurements can also be used to gather solar radiation data. This information may be used to compute sun intensity across a vast geographic area.
To determine sun intensity, you must first understand the following parameters:
- The solar constant is the average quantity of solar radiation received by the Earth at one astronomical unit (AU) distance from the Sun.
- The solar declination angle is the angle formed by the sun's beams and the plane of the earth's equator.
- The solar altitude angle is the angle formed between the sun's beams and a line perpendicular to the earth's surface.
- The solar azimuth angle is the angle formed by the sun's beams and a line traveling east-west.
- The sun intensity is greatest in India at solar noon. The time when the sun reaches its greatest position in the sky is known as solar noon. Solar noon in Chennai is generally about 12:30 PM.
A solarimeter may be used to measure the solar intensity in Chennai at various times of the day. You may also consult the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) or other sources for sun intensity statistics.
