People do calculate the active surface area from measuring the capacitance of the materials. But it will give you the wet surface area of the materials. In the literature there is not much report on how to calculate the actual electrochemical active surface area (ESA) of non-precious non-metal containing materials (like carbon, N-doped carbon, etc.).
Recently Arup et al published two papers on how to calculate the ESA for carbon-based materials.
