Greetings, i'm doing a patient-derived xenograft study and having difficulties in calculating the sample size for patients needed in my study which leads to the number of mice i need for the study. The only information that is relevant that i have is the success rate of the model establishment from previous publications but that's about it. Is it okay to just calculate the sample size based on previous success rate or is there other ways about? thank you for reading
Hi Amir, including an additional amount of animals depending on the model take rate is a good start. I would also include 10% more mice on top of that to factor in technical error by the scientist running the experiment.
Previous studies are quite helpful; however, I also suggest using G POWER software.
of course, considering previous studies is a good way. you have some limitations for the number of patients participating in various phases of clinical trials. For the phase 1 usually 2-8 patients in each group are enough. For animal studies, you have also some limitations, because of moralities. 6-10 animals in each group are usually enough. After all, you can use a software called "G Power" for calculating sample size of your study.
