You could try with the hei package (https://github.com/timfolsom/hei).

It's not available for the last version of R, but it can be installed using these commands:

install.packages("devtools") devtools::install_github("timfolsom/hei")

It may not be relevant for NHANES 2018/2018, but you could create your own functions using the scripts' ones as a reference.

I am in the same situation; I want to use this HEI index on my data, using R as the statistical package. Is it possible or should it be used necessarily and legally only SAS as a statistical package?

You can try my new written package: https://github.com/jamesjiadazhan/dietaryindex

It can support calculating HEI2015 using NHANES and ASA24 data with just 1 step. Entry-level R knowledge is sufficient to use the package. Plus, you can calculate all other dietary indexes (AHEI, DASH, MED) if the serving sizes are provided.

In the future, calculations of AHEI and other dietary indexes would be available using NHANES data in just 1 step too.

Update: the dietaryindex package (version 0.6.0) can calculate HEI2015, AHEI, DASH, and MED now using NHANES data after 2005. You can try my new written package here: https://github.com/jamesjiadazhan/dietaryindex

Update: the dietaryindex package in R (Version 0.15.0): MEDI and DASHI for NHANES functions are available. The original DASH trial and PREDIMED trial data are available as example data. You can calculate DASHI using the DASH trial data and MEDI using the PREDIMED trial data, which allows you compare different DASH or MED diets in multiple studies to improve the inconsistencies of evaluating and defining DASH or MED diets. American Cancer Society 2020 diet score (ACS2020_V1 and ACS2020_V2) are available as generic functions. The goal of dietaryindex is to offer streamlined methods to standardize the definition of dietary patterns and assess the adherence to dietary patterns in epidemiologic and clinical studies, facilitating precision nutrition.

The simple HEI scoring algorithm method is applied to calculate scores using computed amounts of each component in the HEI. To use the simple HEI scoring method, first the ratio of the dietary constituent to energy is constructed and scored according to the scoring standards. The component scores are summed to calculate the total score. The mean total score is the mean of the total scores across individuals. When more than one 24HR per person is available, the score is calculated by summing across all days per person before scoring.
