Hi everyone,

I have been trying to figure out a reliable way regarding how to present % intergroup difference of a marker level between study and control groups in a clinical trial and I am confused.

For example, I have come across this study: Valls et al., 2016 (https://sci-hub.se/10.1016/j.phymed.2016.08.007).

Here, they reported an increase in HDL-C in the study group which is from 1.55 to 1.62 mmol/L and a decrease in the placebo group which is from 1.58 to 1.47 mmol/L. In the paper, they also reported a % change from placebo as 14.06%.

Then, I did my own calculations:

* The increase in the study group from 1.55 to 1.62 mmol/L in HDL-C --> +4.52%

* The decrease in the placebo group from 1.58 to 1.47 mmol/L --> -6.96%

Even if I attempt to sum these up (4.52+6.96=11.48%), I still cannot obtain 14.06%. How is this % intergroup difference is calculated?

And statistically what is the more accurate and reliable way of calculating % intergroup difference?

I would really appreciate if you can help me out.

Many thanks to everyone who reads this message!
