Applying a force to this simple indentation force results in unrealistic distortion and overlapping (see image).
I have tried different ways suggested in other threads
- closing gaps between parts
- Master+Slave contact surfaces
- Rounded edge at the indentation
etc.
Is there perhaps a setting in Abaqus to not allow elements to move into each other?
Any suggestions would greatly help.

Is overlapping seen after such settings: Options->Common...: Basic tab, Deformation Scale Factor: Uniform - on, Value 1 ?
I think the geometry of the model was not properly define. The overlapping bars, nodes, erea or volume should have identified early. Just redefine the model geometry accurately. Thanks
Be aware that for an indentation simulation, your mesh is much too coarse and that your final picture shows one of the worst cases of hourglassing I have ever seen.

Armand Augustin Fondjo , this is a very good idea. I have tried different geometries and found that the round corner has less overlapping. Would you recommend any other modeling techniques?
Thank you Martin Baeker, the hourglassing is very bad. My concern is that this will affect the resultant stresses. The mesh size is 0.01 at the point shown for a model that is the size of 60x60 (see images attached). Would you recommend an even finer mesh?
Well, Hertzian contact problems are difficult - I think the example problems manual covers this in some detail, so I would recommend to look there.
