We used DNA fragmentation assay to assess the apoptosis mediated death of cells, which is also known as Program Cell Death (PCD). Other test is Comet assay.
You could use a commercially available Annexin-V FITC and propidium iodide kit to detect extracellularised phosphatidylserine (Annexin-V FITC; apoptosis) and loss of plasma membrane integrity (propidium iodide; late apoptosis/necrosis). You could also use Mitotracker CMTMROS which monitors mitochondrial membrane potential.
Caspase 3 -PARP, could possible with IF.
It is specific for Apoptosis.
Another simplest and reproducible technique for cell death assay by fluorescence or Absorbance measurement by Alamar Blue.
The Alamar blue is specific for cell death, but not only specific for Apoptosis.By using two different emission wave lengths one can easily identify the cell death via quantitative method.

Is this intrinsic or extrinsic apoptosis? How are you inducing it?
I used a Guava Nexin assay containing annexin V and 7-AAD. Actually Chris Coates answer is very thorough.
