I need suggestions for suitable statistical analysis for the following data set: I asked respondents to name their three most important priorities in order of importance in connection with my research topic on three spatial scales. This survey gave me 3x3 variables on the three spatial scales which are categorical but within a spatial scale also ordered. I coded the answers classifying the priorities under certain grouping categories. In this way I can do some descriptive statistics. However I wonder what other types of analysis I could do using spss 28 or any other suitable software. Could you please give some suggestions?
There are many ways to deal with ordinal variables like the "scale" you describe. Common ones include various non-parametric methods (which do not make assumptions about underlying distributions), methods for rank-order data analysis, certain types of ANOVA models, simple Chi-square counts, etc. Nowadays, non-parametric regression, discriminant analysis, and machine learning algorithms for classification (e.g., neural nets, decision forests, etc.) are often employed, depending upon how you frame your hypotheses and what your research purposes are. Sometimes, e.g., Likert scale data, you can make "equi-interval" assumptions - particularly if you only have a variable with 2 or 3 levels or, say, a bounded scale scored 1-5 where 1 is "bad" and 5 is "good", etc. I suggest that you check out Wikipedia articles on these subjects. SPSS offers many tools for such analyses, as does SAS, MATLAB, or most any statistical software packages.
