Lowering the pH of mobile phase to a value below 1,5 in respect to pKa ensure that 99% of the molecules is not in ionic form i.e. the molecules can have a retention in reversed phases.

Pure silica gel is not suitable for reversed phases.

Just wanted to add we need to know if A or B is acid or base then we can work out the ionic state from the pKa values at different pH.
