Omer - there are many different forms of case study - both quantitative and qualitative. Qualitative case study may well use interview and content analysis - as just one potential approach. Essentially, anyone conducting case study methods needs to identify and justify their exact paradigm, framework and design. The technique used for participant recruitment will depend accordingly.

As Dean Whitehead says above, case study design can be qualitative, quantitative or mixed-method, depending on the aims of the specific piece of research and the questions that need to be answered. It's understandable that you would think case study is an inherently qualitative research design, though. It's unfortunately written about in that way in some texts. Ultimately, the methods used should be chosen because they are well suited to answer the research questions, so there is no abstract method or combination of methods that is or is not correct. "Who should choose the participant group" is less of an issue than how to choose that group (e.g. sampling frame or inclusion and exclusion criteria), which depends again on the specific needs and aims of the particular study.

The process can involve creating codes to be used for the analysis of the case study data and then coding the data. Codes are tags or labels that assign units of meaning to the data and for the quick identification of the segments relating to the research questions and any potential themes

Ömer Sari there is some confusion (in the methodological literature, not just on your part) about the distinction between research design and research method. "Case study" is a design, in which many different methods (of collecting and analysing data) can be used. "Interview" is a method of collecting data. "Qualitative" and "quantitative" are descriptors of different classifications of data, generally meaning non-numeric and numeric, respectively (although some authors have debated the utility of qualitative and quantitative as labels). Referring to a method as qualitative merely suggests that it leads to the collection of non-numeric (e.g. textual) data.

I totally agree with your answer. It is obvious that there is a confusion of concepts. In addition, I see that some researchers include the case study, the research topics because of the meaning of the sentence. Thus, the issue has become even more complex.

Identify and define the research questions - The researcher starts with establishing the focus of the study by identifying the research object and the problem surrounding it. The research object would be a person, a program, an event or an entity.

Select the cases - In this step the researcher decides on the number of cases to choose (single or multiple), the type of cases to choose (unique or typical) and the approach to collect, store and analyze the data. This is the design phase of the case study method.

Collect the data - The researcher now collects the data with the objective of gathering multiple sources of evidence with reference to the problem under study. This evidence is stored comprehensively and systematically in a format that can be referenced and sorted easily so that converging lines of inquiry and patterns can be uncovered.

Evaluate and analyze the data - In this step the researcher makes use of varied methods to analyze qualitative as well as quantitative data. The data is categorized, tabulated and cross checked to address the initial propositions or purpose of the study. Graphic techniques like placing information into arrays, creating matrices of categories, creating flow charts etc. are used to help the investigators to approach the data from different ways and thus avoid making premature conclusions. Multiple investigators may also be used to examine the data so that a wide variety of insights to the available data can be developed.

Presentation of Results - The results are presented in a manner that allows the reader to evaluate the findings in the light of the evidence presented in the report. The results are corroborated with sufficient evidence showing that all aspects of the problem have been adequately explored. The newer insights gained and the conflicting propositions that have emerged are suitably highlighted in the report.

Are you studying a single case or comparing multiple cases? If you are working with two or more cases, I highly recommend Yin's book, Comparative Case Studies.

Case study is both quantitative and qualitative. Reality does not make the distinction. And note, case study is a way of illuminating pockets of reality (phenomena) that cannot be exposed using the hypothetico-deductive approach.

Yin (1984), who conducted research on this subject, suggested that the case study method was carried out by cultural analysis (ethnography) or participant observer. However, as you mentioned in the data analysis part, I have seen that many studies are conducted as a quantitative method. My question starts at this point. When I examined the studies published on this subject, I could not make a definite judgment about how my application should be. Have you come across any research that you can show as an example in this regard? Could you share it if you came across it?
