I have generated a UMAT code and I wanted to test it for a single load-unload test. To do so, is it enough to create a load-unload FEM model in Abaqus and implement the UMAT for it or I need to make changes within my UMAT for the unloading case as well (for example for obtaining trial stresses or updating the stresses in the UMAT code, should I use a minus sign instead of a plus sign)?
I'd really appreciate it if you answer my question.

No, you are not required to change anything in UMAT depending on the material model you are using. For example, if there is phase transformation based on the nature of load change as for SMA, you have to prescribe the nature of loading. On the other hand, if no such case is to be implemented, defining an unloading step in Abaqus will work fine. The other way is to define the amplitude of load through the step.
