I am new to the field of sEMG so any guidance or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I am collecting facial EMG data from two groups: healthy vs individuals with neurological impaired following stroke. I intend to collect data from 5 orofacial muscle groups during MVIC tasks and word/speech production.
My main aims are to compare the EMG activity of the two groups for each of the MVIC tasks and the speech tasks. Besides, I need to compare the % of muscle activity during the speech task when compared to MVIC activity? I was thinking about using the root mean square to compare the two groups.
Please feel free to guide me to articles or textbooks that can improve my understanding of sEMG data analysis.

Can you elicit a true MVIC in these orofacial muscle groups? This will require training..

Dr. Warren is right. EMG level comparison is very problematic.
You may use on/off timings or durations easily after determining some suitable thresholds very easily though.
But it comes to my mind that you may try EMG levels' scaling for each person (by their individual maximum values across all their individual utterances). Then you may compare EMG levels. It may worth a try.

O’Dwyer et al (1981) provide a list of MVIC tests for facial muscles that can give rise to maximum EMG signals.
I was thinking of using MVICs as I want to compare non-speech oral activity versus speech activity and determine percentages.
For comparison purposes, can you compare mean amplitude during performance of MVCs and dynamic tasks using root mean square (RMS)?
