I see you are working on packaging and materials. Would that mean pulp and paper manufacturing is part of what you study? If so, I would also look into recycling technology. My thesis adviser did a lot of work on how to deal with "stickies". Posted-Notes have the "stickies" and those have created a lot of problems in recycling. He patented some ways to resolve that. Anyway, biorefineries... I would also consider learning microbial genetic engineering tools: whole cell biocatalysis, metabolic engineering, etc. There are all sorts of applications that could be created. One that I would love to see is a bug that helped breakdown polystyrene; that has been started already but last I saw the work is nowhere where we would need it to help breakdown the massive amount that we produce. There is a lot of packaging waste that is not all cellulose. So keep an open mind, study engineering, biology, chemistry, don't just think about one area as there are multi-disciplinary areas of research.
Just saw upon looking deeper about the cosmetics/HDPE.... Sounds again like multi-disciplinary... polymer expertise, chemical/material interactions. Be a sponge and adsorb all you can. Try not only going to your department invited guest seminars but other department seminars as well. Regardless if your interests are micro-chip packaging, or chemical or cosmetics packaging, or pulp and paper... broaden your scope. The seminars when you can go give you more up to date state of the art ideas to problems being worked on.
