At times we think that we come up with interesting new research ideas, but somehow the results don’t go in the direction expected, or we end up publishing the work in a different journal from the one or ones in mind, so how predictable can research be, and do you agree that at times it can be very unpredictable?

Given people's ideological commitments we can often predict, in broadly general terms, what types of research they will or won't pursue, and also what research outcomes they are willing to accept or reject as confirmatory or disconfirmatory of certain hypotheses.
These are called natural events in terms of statistics and very common also. If every thing goes as per our prediction, then that process is driven under the influence of special caused and presence of special causes is not desirable.
Interesting question Sanaa N Al- Haj Ali. If research was indeed predictable (and deterministic), then it would surely be uninspiring for most people. In my view, the unpredictability and lack of clear direction is exactly what makes it exciting and challenging for scientists. Pushing the boundaries of knowledge is no easy task. Having said that, it comes with a certain level of frustration that is inherent to the nature of working on "new things". In the interest of science, I think this process is a healthy journey for academic professionals.
