In Sri Lankan institutes and universities, we usually use free patent databases mainly, Patentscope and Espacenet. But some use commercial databases Innovation Q Plus and Derwent.
Once research topics are brought up, we predict what kind of IP can be generated from each research topic, then accordingly we do keyword searches in the patent databases to find out the existing prior arts. Depending on the prior art, we suggest to the researchers the possible area to do modifications so they can go for a patent or not to go for a patent. More importantly, there can be good inventions but not really a commercial potential, so we do not encourage patents in every research.
