I am planning to use L-glutamic acid to induce cell cytotoxicity on human neuroblastoma cell line, SH-SY5Y as glutamate is known to cause oxidative damage to neuronal cells in the case of Alzheimer disease. Could anyone please advise me on the amount to add in the culture to cause cell death? Or if you know any protocol please do share.

for shy cells, you have to use glutamate in excess of 1mM to get any significant cell death (try 5mM to start with), because shy cells are ways less sensitive to glutamate that actual neurons. Consider that NMDA causes up to 30% of shy cell death at 5mM. The question is whether shy cells are a good model for what you want to study.
