Taking 'Student Feedback' is routinized in most of the educational institutes. Many times students without realizing the importance of "Student Feedback' just tick the columns. All category of students participate - students regular to the class with more than 90 % attendance, students with less than 40 -50 % attendance etc. Faculty who give marks /grades liberally are favored by the students. There is a possibility of manipulations too.
Any feedback for the service you give is very important. Student do compare instructors and courses when they do evaluation. Good teachers do benefit from these feedback. Unfortunately we have some dis-honest instructors uses these feedbacks to prove that they are good. University admin should be smarter to read through the lines. They should compare the two scores teacher and students scores.
From Students point of view they judge the intructors not from his teaching method but from his/her attitude and overall behaviour and that's how they rate the intructor (teaching have points too), and i think teacher should well also be aware of their students problems related to their course work, so student feedback should be taken seriously by students and faculty too, thats's true mostly students don't take it serious and just randomly fill the performa, to prove the importance of feedback examples needs to be set, i am part of this system, and i didn't see any change from students feedback, so how can it develop student interest in this routine, but its positive thing that should carry on with some +ve results
In a telephonic conversation you cannot just talk on your own with the person on the other side of the phone going silent.
The response helps you to think, analyse and respond back. Same is the case with the importance of feed back in any lecture or classroom. Students should be given a fair chance to express their views and responses on how were they able to understand and comprehend what was told to them during the lecture.
When someone (the teacher) decides to 'GO' for the feedback, it means that it is important primarily for the teacher. It gives a clear understanding of how well the teacher is accepted, what are the plus and minuses of the the teaching style and even the quality of lecture contents. Apart from the evaluation of the teacher, it really helps to understand how students are performing in the particular subject.
Such feedback really helped me in one semester -
Some students reported that they find the lecture class boring or not interesting. But the same students, along with the rest of the class agreed (remarked) that the laboratory sessions were 'enjoyable' and they learned a lot during the lab. Then having discussions with 'those' students revealed that they had not studied the basic or pre-requisites earlier and thus had some difficulty in the theory classes. So some remedial teaching was provided to these students and they could perform better in the final exam.
Therefore the teacher should look at it very positively.
Second, if the teacher is well accepted by students, they will equally be serious about giving the TRUE feedback.

1. Promoting the ethics of providing true feedback
2. highlighting the impact of student feedback on the institute and the society
2. Developing policies to ensure that the feedback will be continue anonymous

Student feedback is an important aspect in a teacher's life. The feedback helps the teacher to know his shortcomings, his strengths and other relevant things which need to be sorted out. This should also be taken positively and in a fair manner by the student community as well. This will help in improving the quality as well as the quantity of knowledge being provided.
Student feedback just like instructor feedback is extremely important. Without effective feedback whether it is from a student or instructor is a vital part of any educational experience. Construct criticism in student feedback is also important. Honesty is the best policy, and from a student's perspective, without feedback, the point of improvement would be pointless and lost. Not only can constructive student feedback assist in improving both the student and instructors overall experience, but it's also a lesson on evaluating. I would encourage implementing a system that includes student feedback on a monthly basis, maybe even weekly.

Feedback is an important component of the formative assessment process. Formative assessment gives information to teachers and students about how students are doing relative to classroom learning goals. From the student's point of view, the formative assessment "script" reads like this: "What knowledge or skills do I aim to develop? How close am I now? What do I need to do next?" My personal experience with student feedback is, that it is extraordinarily fair. Although I teach mainly courses which require a lot of mathematical knowledge and I have a reputation as a tough grader, the feedback I got can only be described as constructive criticism.
The students do accept, that I require 25 to 30 hours of work per credit and they understand, that they don't always have to like what they learn.
It is important however, that you make very clear, what you expect in a course at the very beginning of the course, and what you are going to expect. Then -that's my experience at least- they will give their feedback based on what you promised / asked for initially.
In short: pay close attention to student feedback. It will help to identify shortcomings in your teaching.
It's pretty important, since this works as a bridge between two different part of a community. It is very essential as it would determine the cohesive work environment.
Student feedback can be useful for the teaching staff (helping them to understand what students like/understand and what they don't like/don't understand) but it doesn't mean that it should be always taken as 100% truth (e.g. some students who are not happy with their grades may give very negatve feedback to the teaching staff in revenge) or that all their suggestions should be always fully followed (e.g. it may not be reasonable to only show videos & cartoons at lectures although some students may like that).
Students feedback is very important but it is very important that teaching staff must imbibe the importance of unbiased feedback method.
The real-time feed back based on the interaction in the class is also very important, as it helps a faculty to decide how to express the concept which is easily understandable.

Student Feedback about Instructor is flawed and directed by "Student is Customer" mindset in most, if not all institutions in India. What most students lack is the maturity to respond to those questions. Student Feedback about his own learning is more relevant than about teaching ability of an instructor.
Dear Professor Girish Kumar Ramaiah, As you are well acquainted about control theory; so, I will answer in that tone. Feedback makes a system more transparent, it provides the correcting measures and the stability of the system can be studied smoothly for different parameters.
As the case of student feedback it will be biased, only the level bias threshold will change from country to country. Further, holding administrative posts (VC, Dean, Provost, DSW, Warden, Proctor,...) an instructor takes many disciplinary actions that might bias the student in his / her feedback. Further, student is also part of the society and student grasp and inculcate in their culture. In some countries students are fair because of the culture and society for those countries students' feedback is good to consider with weight. Also, since my student life I heard "VOCAL MINORITY & SILENT MAJORITY" is reality. Its the objectivity of institution administration that how to involve in taking the feedback of SILENT MAJORITY.
I also think "student feedback" is very important. However, it should be analyzed very carefully. More often than not, students are not mature enough to evaluate their teachers. My experience tells me that most of the time learners evaluate their present teachers against their previous ones. Therefore, even if the present teacher is more knowledgeable and knows his/her job, learners favor the previous one of whom experts may have a low opinion.
Nevertheless, "student feedback" on their feeling about the classroom atmosphere, diversity of the exercises, how much they find the class interesting and their expectations of a good classroom can be very vital to the success or failure of a program.
@Girish, very serious thread! Student's feedback is important in so many areas. Student feedback is supposed to be on an anonymous basis, towards the end of selected study-units! Many of contributors have treated the issue of evaluation of teachers as well as improvement of teaching process.

Student feedback is essential to improve the classroom delivery of a given subject. As you correctly identified not all of it is good because of some of the doubts that you have raised. An experienced teacher can easily identify what is good in the feedback to support for improvement when it is next offered.
