I am planning a sampling of Mugil cephalus and I am going to sample blood to get the plasma. I have already done this sampling using syringes internally wet with sodium heparin. The method I used was to wash the walls of the syringes with liquid heparin. My questions are: how much heparin I need (ml) to get the blood from about 100 animals? are there any particul characteristcs required for the heparin (e.g. UI)? thanks
I think using EDTA is preferred than using heparin and I suggest using EDTA instead of heparin to collect plasma samples. EDTA chelates calcium ions in the blood and accordingly prevents clotting. So, it is unlikely to have any potential negative effects on your markers of interest.
Dear Miss Reboa, for the standardized method of fish blood anticoagulants two main components are used: Heparin and EDTA.
For heparin, two-hop heparinized syringes (25,000 Âμl / ml) are usually allowed to dry in the open air.
For EDTA it is recommended to use concentrations between 4-5mg / ml of blood and the protocol is the same as for Heparin, i.e,. dry it in the open air.

In the version of Roberts R. J. (2012) attached at this message, there is nothing about fish haematology because it has placed a huge part on serology.
