Weather Station network is installed in a city to understand to local climate conditions. The meteorological data like air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, precipitation, etc. is obtained at very fine resolution (sub-hourly time step). Such datasets are very beneficial in understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of microclimate.
If I understand it correctly, there is no simple answer to that question because the representativeness of a weather station depends on multiple factors, related to exposure and surrounding environment characteristics, and also changes depending on the meteorological parameter you are considering. I would say that you need to take into account these factors and in the limit use a different buffer size for each station and/or parameter.

Pedro Bruno Silva Thank you for your answer. I intend to study urban heat island effects using observed temperature from a network of weather stations in a city. Different studies consider buffer zones anywhere from 100 to 1000 meters, but there is no specific/ standard criteria to select it.

It depends on the objectives of your study. If you intend to study urban heat island (UHI) effects using observed temperature from a network of weather stations in a city, the urban stations could be located anywhere except for on buildings or roads or any other artificial structures, if the weather stations are densely distributed. However, specific criteria have to be formulated to select the reference (rural) stations if you need to calculate the UHI intensity. The rural stations should be located far from any artificial buildings, and they should have escaped from the UHI effect themselves. We developed a few procedures to determine the reference (rural) stations for calculating UHI intensity of a city and for evaluating urbanization effect on long-term surface air temperature trends estimated from urban/national stations in a large area, and you may find them helpful in your study.

I think this needs more comparative studies because it will certainly change from one region to another. Because certainly the area with high wind speed differs from the static, and the area with high population density is certainly different from the sparsely populated. The buffer zone must be a specific area for each study.
