I am researching employee sick leave comparing Australia to other countries.
In Australia the average employee takes 8 to 9 days sickness per annum, which intuitively seems a little high for a country that has a generally favourable climate, quality of life and low pollution.
If you would be kind enough to provide sick leave data or direct me to data sources it would be appreciated.
It depends on where you work and wether you are a male or female after a child birth.
At the university you typically do not need to register yourself as "sick" - you just "work from home" - i.e., cure your illness - for a few days. How does one account for those?
I would say an average of 6 days over the last 6 years. At my current and previous institution one is allowed to take 90 days over a 3 year cycle
Kenneth: I take it upon myself to NOT bother the administration with my sickness, and I do that because I - as most keen researchers in our profession do - know I work harder than most on every given real workday. :-)
Thank you all for your answers. Our research to date which triangulates sickness with other data shows sick leave is sometimes taken on spurious grounds, which Kenneth Towe has alluded to in his answer. On the other hand, many (perhaps most) employees strive to work even when sick, as alluded to by Michael Patriksson. Although these factors are “known” in an anecdotal sense, what we are trying to achieve in this research is a more objective understanding supported with data across different industries, particularly on the first phenomenon.
