EW Bullinger was an Anglican cleric in 1890s who asserted that biblical numbers and gematria showed unusual and consistent patterns.
I have been reading his numerology and found errors in his methodology. But I cannot find where he has been debunked by theologians nor mathematicians. I recently published a short paper on this.
Does anybody know of any others who found errors in Bullinger?
I do not yet have permission to put the paper onto Researchgate but will seek to do so asap.
In the meantime I am keen to know whether Bullinger has been debunked by anybody to date? Does anyone have any papers on this?
From my analysis to date I do not think his gematria method has any merit, so I am surprised he remains widely accepted across the spectrum of Christianity.
Isn't Umberto Eco's "Foucault's pendulum" a fun pun against such quasi-religious nuttery? I'd like to hear more about it. I recall a phone booth having mystical proportions.
Thanks for that comment Michael Patriksson. I have had a few comments from those who have read the article that pointing out the errors of Bullinger and his ilk is long overdue.
Well, Christian science is a contradiction in terms. But there you go - you can't make everyone listen.
Newton was both a scientist and a Christian. Come to think of it so were Copernicus, Napier, Kepler, Galileo, Pascal, Leibniz, Faraday, Maxwell and others besides.
Although I find most theology is debunkable (such as Bullinger's numerics and most mainstream Christian doctrine) theology is still a subject of inquiry to my mind. Debunking gematria is an output of that inquiry.
My other inquiries (outside Researchgate) have provided new material debunking Ivan Panin who, like Bullinger, found mathematical patterns where none existed.
