I understand that a higher number of items are likely to produce more precise estimates (smaller standard errors) and more powerful fit analysis. However, it is not clear to me what the acceptable minimum number of items is for a Rasch analysis. I am particularly interested to know this in the context of health-related quality-of-life measurement but would be interesting to see how this relates to other fields of measurement as well.

A bit of context: I have patient-reported outcome data on two items (each with the same 5-point response categories) completed by 300 people with a disease condition, and I was interested to find out if these two items formed a valid measure. I am currently exploring the ways I could analyse the data. I have some experience with Rasch analysis.
