This is a difficult question. It depends on the virulence of the infectiona nd the response to applied antimicrobic medications. The best approach is to identify the microorganisms causing the infection (hemocultures, puncture,etc.). It depends on the course of the osteomyelitis in the given case. So the decision how long to treat the child with acute osteomyelitis should be taken individually from case to case. In my opinion It should be continued till the general state, the local state and the blood parameters for infection go back to normal levels. Sometimes this takes 2 months. You also should consider the necessity for surgical debridement in severe cases.
