If nobody in your household has tested positive for the new coronavirus or is displaying any symptoms, you can clean your clothes as you usually do.

But if you’ve been out in public (to a shop, for instance) and people around you haven’t been adhering to the CDC’s social distancing guidelines (in other words, staying a minimum of 6 feet away from other people who don’t live in your household), it’s probably a good idea to machine wash the clothes you wore outside when you get home.

Sufficient studies to support the exact lifespan of the virus on different surfaces have not been done yet. Hence, we cannot tell for sure how long the virus may linger on different articles of clothing. It is probably best to take proper precautions if you think that your clothes have been exposed to the virus.

Clinical trials improvement through four phases to test a treatment, finds the appropriate dosage, and look for side effects. If, the first three phases, researchers find a drug or other intervention to be safe and effective for clinical use and continues to monitor its effects. Clinical trials of drugs usually described based on their phase.

It is still not certain how long the coronavirus survives on surfaces. Preliminary studies suggest that the virus can persist for a few hours up to several days. The problem weighing on most peoples’ minds right now is the coronavirus, and everyone is keeping clean and ensuring they stay inside, but what about our clothes? How long does it take for the virus to go away from fabric?

There have been numerous studies with scientists and students testing the virus lifespan on cardboard, paper and plastic among other things.

However, on metal and plastic the virus can survive for up to three days - which is in large part due to the surface of these materials being non-porous.

Clothes, on the other hand, are porous surfaces which means they trap the virus, making it harder to transmit. Studies have shown that viruses survive longer on non-porous surfaces which means clothes are relatively safe.

However, the best option would be to regularly deep clean your clothes in warm water - as soap and water always kills viruses. And stay clean.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the most likely way for the virus to spread is through close contact with someone who's infected (even if they don't know it). This is why continuing to practice social distancing is so important.

However, early laboratory evidence also suggests that coronavirus can survive on plastic and stainless steel surfaces anywhere from hours to a few days. This is why it's important to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face and clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces every day.

Unfortunately, the same study didn't examine how long the virus can survive on fabrics — so it remains a possibility that coronavirus can live on clothes for several hours.

Fabrics are made from different materials and so there will be differences in staying times of this virus on them. It is better to change closes for wash or at least let them away several days before reuse.

The period of stay varies according to the air temperature, in cold weather, it stays for a long time, but in hot weather, it stays for a short time.

In an investigation on the stability of the SARS-CoV2 virus on different surfaces, the investigators could not detect any infectious virus from treated cloth on day 2.

Right now, no one is quite sure about the answer to that. It can survive for days on smooth surfaces like plastic and stainless steel, but how it fares on more porous materials is not established. Viruses like this tend to last less time on fabrics than on metals.
