Panjab University recently ranked 239. It would be interesting if we were aware of how this ranking is done. Panjab University found itself at the 239th spot, ahead of institutions including IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur and topped all institutions in India. Panjab University is ranked at position 1 within India. What are the factors that determine the rankings?

These rankings done by the Times Higher Education (THE powered by Thomson Reuters) World University 2013-2014 provide the only global university performance tables to judge research-led universities or institutes across all their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. In doing so they employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators and undertake a big exercise in accordance with the methodology described on their website (http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/) to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, which are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments. Their findings based on 13 performance indicators have been further analysed and “grouped into five areas:
• Teaching: the learning environment (worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score)
• Research: volume, income and reputation (worth 30 per cent)
• Citations: research influence (worth 30 per cent)
• Industry income: innovation (worth 2.5 per cent)
• International outlook: staff, students and research (worth 7.5 per cent).”
If the institutions do not cross certain thresholds, these are excluded from consideration. For example, “Universities are excluded from the Times Higher Education World University Rankings if they do not teach undergraduates; if they teach only a single narrow subject; or if their research output amounted to fewer than 1,000 articles between 2007 and 2011 (200 a year). In some exceptional cases, institutions that are below the 200-paper threshold are included if they have a particular focus on disciplines with generally low publication volumes, such as engineering or the arts and humanities. Further exceptions to the threshold are made for the six specialist subject tables. To calculate the overall rankings, "Z-scores" were created for all data sets except for the results of the academic reputation survey. The calculation of Z-scores standardises the different data types on a common scale and allows fair comparisons between different types of data - essential when combining diverse information into a single ranking.”
For a long time has puzzled me the phenomenon, such global rankings in various fields and areas.
Not denying objectivity the authors of these rankings, I wonder to what extent it can be concluded that there is fulfilled unity the criteria for the ranking of such the number of analyzed institutions. It seems to me impossible that authors of this ranking possessed a set of uniform data for all schools.
I think, that I will be more convinced for the results, if such a ranking list will included only 50-100 universities in the world, and not a few thousand.
Dear Vijay, thank you very much for the link and detailed explanation of the evaluation procedure used for the THE rankings. Looks quite reasonable and trustworthy to me. Anyway, I did not find any surprises or big changes. Probably the most important factor which has a profound bearing on the ranking system is still the international reputation of a particular university, either established a long time ago or gained just recently. I think the national (rather than international) rankings are more important for prospective students when they choose a university in their own country. Very few can afford studying abroad (especially in top ranking schools).
