In many situations and on different occasions, one may be linguistically rude. One may pragmatically insult someone else or issue different speech acts which reflect his rudeness. What kinds of speech acts can be used to express rudeness?
In interpersonal encounters, the speaker must abide with the conventions of face saving. As such, speech acts that involve assessments of psychological states or attitudes may violate politeness strategies by exceeding the normal levels of being too evasive, formal, or obsequious.
Sarcasm, name calling, putting labels and slandering are examples of pragmatic rudeness. Silent treatment and ignoring someone (for example when an audience member asks a question) are also other examples.
I’d suggest that rudeness includes a lack of respect and care, if the other person feels respected and comfortable in a situation. You don’t necesarily need to be hostile or ‘actively rude’. Terms like “well if you say so” can be pragmatically very diverse. It can mean “I trust your opinion” or “whatever, I’m not taking you seriously and just want to end the conversation”
