To me, the most interesting development is the critical assessment of multimodal and socio-semiotic resources in communication. that is, not only verbal language, but also non verbal, such as movement (i.e. kinesics), posture and social distance (i.e. proxemics, see Hall 1968), etc. etc.
A good researcher can diagnose the practical aspects of data through statistical applications, but the problem is that some researchers are weak in statistical skills.
