I think it depends upon the nature, content and the matter of the research. Unnecessary photographs, charts or graphs are not necessary but if they are demanded for the work then are necessary.

i believe it depends on the exact nature of the study undertaken, because that itself will dictate the best way to represent the information obtained, the point to be kept under consideration is conveying of the information with clarity and um ambiguity.

as for me, and as the nature of my research dictates, i prefer to use extensively mathematical equations to convey the results obtained.

I second the remarks by Debopam Ghosh - as a mathematician I would say that the best representation of mathematical research is a clearly stated and motivated theorem, followed by a lucid, well explained proof, and by possible analogies, illustrations, applications, and so on.

thank u for adding an answer , infact i agree on those lines. but the point we are trying to put is how much weightage one puts by adding charts ,figures, photographs.if we can analyse it .

The rational answer is not possible, I guess. It depends upon the nature of the research.

It is not only for presenting, the first stage of data analysis is visualization. Check the Anscombe Quartet which have same descriptive statistics but understanding changes when graphically visualized.
