I am 26 year old medical student interested in a career in psychiatry and mental health. I was wondering how important it is to keep your research areas focused. My research foci are so much scattered and I just research in whatever interests me or what I am passionate about. How detrimental is it to one's academic career.

I describe my research aspirations as:

1) I research in medical student mental health/psychology because I myself had a history and would like to create more awareness.

2) I write about stigma related to mental health in developing countries because of the need to attract more medical students to Psychiatry.

3) I write about maternal and child mental health because the maternal-child bond fascinates me so much.

4) And information visualization in Psychiatry: what could be better than knowing all the important works ever published in Psychiatry.

5) Now I am interested in virtual reality related psychological therapies. And I would like to explore it. I even plan to pursue a college degree in it.

Its just everywhere. How can I keep myself focused, to truly pursue something remarkable?
