Hello every one, I am interested in doing some analyses on the genome of some organisms but the downloaded format I have have this
...genomic.fa.gz as
extension. What can I do to have it in the txt or fasta format so that I can easily analyse. I will be grateful with your contributions.
fa.gz means they are fasta files, but compressed. You need to decompress. On Windows you can use WinZip, on Unix gzip -d etc.
This is a fasta file in compressed form. You can extract the file according to your operating system. Also, possibility is that file must be really heavy. I would recommend to read it with some R/Bioconductor package or with a different text editor other than notepad (if this is really huge file).
It is easier to handle big genomic data files (.fasta or .txt) in Linux/Unix. If it goes really big (like., 5GB or even bigger) you can use vim editor or any scripting language to execute your analysis on this.
I agree with the answers, I want to presume that the files are large and that's why it was zipped.
