In the webpage Mirages and other atmospheric optic phenomena http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/atmos/mirage.html it states the atmospheric refraction can project images for very large distances. It depends on the atmospheric temperature gradient and other conditions. The image can be projected farther the closest the place is from the Artic region.

But, a very large distance is a subjective statement. Hence my question: theoretically, according to Physics, under the best atmospheric refraction conditions, how many kilometers could an image be projected over the ocean through atmospheric refraction?
