Praziquantel should be very effective at treating taeniasis, as long as the tapes are not resistant to praziquantel. Mike Gemmell did a lot of work in New Zealand in the 1970s in particular (and this was published) on the use of praziquantel to control taeniads in dogs (it was very effective). Though I suspect most of this will not be available through internet. Unfortunately Mike Gemmell is now dead.

I would expect praziquantel to be very effective against T. saginata, but don't know how effective it would be against T. solium.

As an aside, I recall Mike telling me that at a Bayer meeting during the run up to the release of Droncit each person at the meeting had a Droncit tablet in front of them and they were expected to take. I don't know if this was true!

Praziquantel at a dose of 5 mg/kg is effective against taeniosis. But praziquantel is not the ideal drug for the treatment of tapeworm as its efficacy, in  doses lower than 10 mg/kg, declines to 67% (Sarti et al., 2000). In doses higher than 10 mg/kg, its efficacy approaches 100% but there is a risk of inducing seizures in asymptomatic individuals harboring a live cysticercus cyst (Flisser et al.,1994; Pawlowski, 1991). This is because praziquantel is both a taenicidal and is cysticidal because it crosses the blood brain barrier. For this reason, niclosamide should be the drug of choice for taeniasis as it is not absorbed by the body and remains in the intestinal lumen. For patients with taeniasis due to Taenia saginata, praziquantel should be ok but not for carriers of T. solium as they may have autoinfected themselves and have cysticercii in their body. If these are in the brain then seizures may be triggered after treatment with praziquantel and the patient can even die. If it is to be given and the location of the cysts is not ascertained, then it should be given together with anti-inflammatory and anti seizure drugs, preferably in a hospital environment so the patient can be closely monitored.
