For those of you who have a native language other than English, what are the similarities and differences in writing in your native language compared to writing in English.
I am interested in:
- Structural differences, such as those that might result from different ways of presenting arguments,
- Differences in your process, such as differences in ways of thinking, mental processes, need for concentration, speed, etc.
- Any other differences you perceive
I know that there is literature out there on how L1 influences L2, and there is some disagreement among scholars. I am interested in your experiences.
Dear Michael,
I am going to provide you with a short but hopefully informative answer.
My first language is Italian. However I have been studying and writing in English now for three years. And actually both in reference to presenting my arguments and how they come about in my mind I feel more confident to use English. The main problem rests however in the grammar and spelling mistakes that I obviously would't do writing in Italian.
Furthermore, in my experience English is more suitable to academic writing for it is more straight to the point. Or perhaps it would be better to say that not being my mother tongue Iargument I need to make a simple and careful use of it, thus writing in a reader friendly manner.
