Greetings,
Recently, I was asked by a researcher how does TiO2 enhance the coatings polymeric structure making it able to reduce corrosion reaction by preventing the penetration of aggressive agents from the surrounding medium (such as seawater). I could not really give a full answer to this question so I hope if someone can share it in its entirety.. that would be very helpful. Thank you..

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most important white pigment used in the coatings industry. It is widely used because it efficiently scatters visible light, thereby imparting whiteness, brightness and opacity when incorporated into a coating. Some bibliographical references also support his contribution to the anticorrosive/antibacterial power of the coating.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) like all other inorganic filler materials when incorporating into the polymeric coatings will effort valuable enhancement in anticorrosion and protective properties via various mechanisms. These mechanisms, in turn, mitigate the ingress activity of corrosive species from reaching the coating-metal interface, thus decreasing the corrosion rate on the material surface. Now if so, the question is what makes titanium dioxide extensively used over other filler types?
Three reasons can put down for this trend:
(1) Its ability to provide a photocatalytic effect that creates a photo-induced redox reaction on the corrosive species that are adsorbed on the coating surface. This ability pushed for further recession on corrosion reactions process.
(2) The antimicrobial property provides killing any bacteria activity on the coating surface. This bacterial activity is normally take part of corrosion process.
(3) TiO2 is extensively used due to their anti-fouling, self-cleaning and also odor-inhibition properties resulting from the photocatalytic effect they exhibit.
So you can see that beside the common mechanisms sharing with other filler types, Titanium dioxide reveal more than one advantageous in minimizing the corrosion process rate and keeping long live coating integrity.
