Dear researchers,
I have some questions about the terminology of representations.
In computationalism and representationalism theories of traditional cognitive sciences it is stated that representation are based on symbolic structures which are processed by the brain in a manner that ist similar to a computer.
Are representations meant to be pre-conscious elements which constitute mental images or are they considered to be mental images like it is said in psychology and philosophy.
Also it is unclear to me how the term symbol is understood in relation to traditional cognitive sciences e.g. Newell & Simons: Physical Symbol System.
It would be really helpful to have a precise definition of the terminology through different disciplines.
Thank you
