I was reading an article (drug formulation) which was published in high impact factor journal and I was shocked that there were mistakes in the rank order of formulas and the author chose the wrong formula to test on patients. This incident made me ask how the research field correct itself?

You could write a letter to the journal establishment with proof that the research in question used a wrong a methodology and that the results are doubtful. If your contentions are wrong, they have to withdraw the paper! Many examples of retraction of papers are there in history even in reputed journals like Nature.
