Friendship is often a prelude to good cooperation etc. People need friendship because they are social beings. Currently, in the era of online news media, including social media portals, friendship can change its character and its meaning.
According to various theories, social media portals change the meaning, ways and habits in the field of communication between people. According to some theories, through social media portals, people replace goodies with communication with wilom friends, some of whom are people with whom people only connect via the Internet and, in principle, do not know those people with whom they communicate via internet media. In this situation, new online media do not help to develop friendships but they can contribute to the creation of a new type of human alienation surrounded by information technology.
In the distant past, two, three and more centuries ago, people had little information that reached people outside the village or village they lived in. Nowadays, people surround terabytes of information, in each chilli Internet user has access to huge knowledge bases, so huge that he will never spend a lot of reading.
On the other hand, the trick is to improve the ability to quickly, selectively and synthetically search for information that is needed at the moment. In connection with this, other theories are also developing suggesting that new online media, including social media portals, may help in the development of friendships, help in establishing new contacts and expanding the set of contacts.
This issue may concern, for example, the extension of scientific knowledge and acquiring new knowledge in the world of science through the Research Gate portal. Thanks to the Research Gate portal it is possible to make new acquaintances among scientists, for example, conducting research in a specific field of knowledge and science.
As a result, it is possible to build international research teams and conduct international scientific research remotely via the Internet. Concluding knowledge in this way in the world of science may be the first stage to the next, in which it will be possible to develop friendships.

Take the mathematical view in a graph. People are edges and relationships are vertices.
In social networks, vertices are links of any kind, between people. You can buy "friends" on fb, hence do not mix friendship and links.
I challenge the earlier input you made by looking for definitions of friendship. It's just "link between people" as properly implied in LinkedIn...
That's the starting point:
-why do people link-up on social networks?
-what are these links (follower, followed?, symmetrical?)
Starting from mathematical notions of graph will be more robust than analogies with legacy-world.
Then comes the question for Behavioral Sciences:
-what links are people after in a digitised world?
Is it self representation in conformance with social models (19th century Western world: as a male you "had to" either be married or a priest ; as a woman you were either someone's wife or someone's daughter or a prostitute and this sort of societal imprisonment was first significantly challenged by the women's liberation movement)
So today to exist in a digitised society, you "need links" on social networks, otherwise you do not exist. Is it a generalised pop-star system scaled down to "normal" people?
Where's the family in this?
Where are real friends in this?
What about colleagues and societal hierarchies (at work, supervisor/supervised, clients, etc)?

Online media enhances the medium for research, interaction and experts suggestions that helps in rapid development of our subject interest.
Definitely, researchgate cuts across the feudal system managed by two platforms competing (Elsevier and Springer) but using the same business model: researchers give for free and these two feudal platforms cash money, with no redistribution to intellectual property owners. I laughed with a sad laugh when I found one of my old articles on one of the two platforms and I could read my own article if I paid 15 USD LOL.
Researchgate is a healthy community based on sharing and contributing.
It meets the CBPP model (commons based peer production) described and analysed of 300+ different communities by EU project P2Pvalue (look it up). Wikipedia is another exemplary project in this category...
