Hello all,
I have modeled crack propagation in three point beam bending test on concrete. Material is homogeneous, loading is applied at the middle of the beam. Initial crack is given at lower middle portion. Beam is symmetric about loading and initial crack. But when the analysis is done, crack is propagated to the right side of the mid plane. Why the crack is propagating towards right side? even though the beam is homogeneous and is symmetric about loading and initial crack. Explanation is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Do you have a testing system like the one in the attached image (ignore the dimensions)? If so, the propagation might occur towards right hand side because of the roller support on the right. Notice that the system is not symmetric for 2D modelling.

Boundary conditions are also same at both the ends and it is 3D model. Attached image shows boundary conditions and loading.

I really wonder what the problem is, by the way how did you be able to visualize crack propagation with that kind of a coarse mesh? Can you attach your ABAQUS model then maybe I can go through it?

When using conventional FEM, after prescribing the location of the crack, Abaqus offers different techniques to simulate crack propagation, including surface and element-based cohesive behaviour and the virtual crack closure technique. For XFEM method prescribing the location of the crack is not necessary. In this case, the cell where the crack will develop is chosen.
