When we submet presentations at international conferences, we speak slowly and use simple and clear items to explane  the main steps of our presentation. Therefor we approximetely not face proplems in presentation , also the scientific terms are easy to understand by other different civilians which come from different countries.

The knowledge about the theme, which is known by you and others, may help in guessing what each one wantst to communicate. If the speaker comes from an English speaking community, but he has a strong influence of a local dialec, it can be extremely difficult to understand his discourse and there is no way out but to let it clear that you are not able to understand that person. Surely, some one in hte audience will be able to help both to convey your meanings to one another.

Sometimes it becomes difficult to understand different English accents, but most of the times those are understandable. I personally do not face much of the difficulty in conferences while interacting with people having different English accent.

I think when we attend an international conference, we must speak and articulate properly for those with challenges with the English accent to understand clearly. Slanging and speaking at a faster rate in the English language may make it difficult for people to understand. Therefore, in our presentations at international conferences, we need to speak slowly, avoid slangs and use gestures more often as well as pictorial elements to illustrate the main points of our powerpoint slides for the presentation.

In addition, we must be courteous and show kindness to our colleagues when we attend international conferences by using commonplace, easy to understand English accent like the BBC English accent as suggested by my sister. Best regards

Proper listening can help us to a large extent..Listening is an art as well. Also by having a sound knowledge of the subject matter we can properly guess what the speaker is upto.

I do recognize very well the differences in oral presentations of people from different English speaking countries. I find myself experienced as I was studying in US and I have attended many international conferences all over the world.

I encountered this kind of problem myself too. In a conference room, after presentation, audience from different countries speaking English with different accents asked questions. Some accents are so strong that I couldn't understand their questions. In this case, you can ask them to say the question again. Sometimes, people in the audience will help and clarify the question for you. There is no really efficient way for this problem. You can only do your best to understand their questions and give the best answers you know.

@ dear Andysah, In an international conference (or even in a in-house conference), there is almost no speakers asking an audience to write his/her question on the blackboard. Besides, the Q & A section for a speaker is usually short. There is no such time for people to write their own questions on the blackboard.

But, I do see some conferences have people write down their questions on a note and pass it to the host, and then to the speaker.

If you are a good English speaker and listener, you will not get any difficulties from different accents.

I agree with Dr. Yehya A. Salih. for me a language it is only a tool to pass the information, the essential is that the listener understands.

The individuals who are attending the conference as with them the knowledgeable program of the conference & in this case due to the different presentation of accents the member can easily understand & grasp the program of the lecture in the conference.

This is my personal opinion 

Now for some important international conference, there are 'professional interpreters' are available. Hopefully one day such service can be commonly apply to regular conferences upon request.

The mean of bribe is concern with: Money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupting the behavior of a person, especially in that person's performance as an athlete, public official, etc.: The motorist offered the arresting officer a bribe to let him go.

My home language is English. Despite this, I sometimes find it difficult to understand what other people, whose home language is also English, are saying at conferences (because of their accents). However, the more audible they are decibel-wise, the smaller the problem. In other words, they must not mutter/mumble. Public speaking ability comes into this, irrespective of the accent.

Please try to enhance your exposure to different cultures, ask questions and clarifications as needed and above all try your best -- do not expect that others will change for  you :)

The variety we have in accents do not prevent understanding, in my opinion and experience - unclearly or ambiguously pronounced words are what get in the way of comprehending someone's speech.  In technical conversations, once someone says an ambiguously pronounced word (examples from what I've personally encountered: he vs. she; speak vs. seek vs. stick; many others I cannot recall now), the listener's thinking time is misdirected in the wrong direction, which can waste a lot time for both sides - since the speaker then has to rewind back to when the confusion started, and speak again.

Again, I've never had problems with people's accents, and grammar surprisingly doesn't get too much in the way either - except when present vs. past tense actually matters in the context of particular discussions, like discussing past literature vs. current work.  Scientific talent is diverse, and not restricted at all these days to native English speakers (in fact, it is likely the native English speakers are now in the minority, or soon will be).

It is always the ambiguously pronounced words that causes the listener's mind to lock up.  Please, practice your speeches, and speak slowly, and economize words .  When someone doesn't understand your question, try not to repeat verbatim what you said (which will inevitably include the ambiguously pronounced word) - please vary the way in which you word the question the 2nd time.  This is a strategy I myself follow, since I found that some words spoken in my Californian? accent are incomprehensible to English speakers from overseas.  We must customize to the audience, and to the people who we're asking questions -- after all, the speaker is the one trying to gain information or disseminate information - it is mainly to the speaker's benefit to be comprehended, and the speaker needs to invest time to practice.  Again, the best speeches these days are made by people with accents, and I don't believe that's an excuse any more for not being understood. 

I invariably understand, without any problem, the English words uttered at conferences by non-English-speakers. However, it was not so easy to figure out, all the time, what a lecturer of mine (long ago) from Scotland was saying. He used to speak very fast, and quietly, as if he was talking to himself. Because of his "local" and unfamiliar (to me) "broad" accent, this didn't work too well. A brilliant scientist but not a good lecturer.

Practice your speech before you go on stage, even you have Power Point slides. When practicing the speech beforehand, not just LOOK through the slides. To me, I think that practice like a real talk will help a lot. I do that quite often myself.

@ Miles B Markus, I encountered a couple of lecturers like the person you described in your post--"A brilliant scientist but not a good lecturer." In this situation, I guess students can only help themselves by sitting in the front in a classroom, and ask all the questions you have in their lectures during their 'Office hours'.

The strong relations with researchers from several countries and the conduct of many international agreements with research centers and attend conferences contribute to facilitate understanding of different civilizations, languages and dialects, especially scientific ones where similar terms are used.

Communication process at international conferences strongly depends on language used. The success of conferences is strongly related to English language as the official language in science, different varietes of English languages.

I think language is important, but in communicating scientific issues other aspects are crucial. I was a colleague of two lecturers, one was skilled, educated and fluent in English, the other was very poor in English, much younger and a bit casual. To my surprise, students´preferences were all for the young lecturer with poor English skills...
