Teachers have the opportunity to nurture, inspire, and challenge students to shape their tomorrows. What is important for you as a teacher to be remembered by - respect, sense of humour, expert, or a combination of these?
I want students to remember what I taught. Students often don't remember who (or even misremember who) their teachers in large undergraduate classes were. (I know this from my experience in advising students in choosing their courses.) But if they remember enough to get aha feelings later in life with respect to something or other that they may not have understood or appreciated at the time, that is enough for me. I have had occasional letters from former students thanking me for something that they had dismissed as useless at the time but became relevant to their situation many years later. I hope there are many students like that even if they don't remember me personally.
The ability to Inspire the application of knowledge in the real world after they graduate is vital - from the letters you receive you are being remembered and appreciated
