I am working on surface modification (roughening) of graphite fiber for copper electroless plating. Found so many literature claiming successful surface modification of graphite using nitric and sulfuric acids but no such evidence provided. Can someone help me by providing literature or supporting documents on the surface modification of graphite. Your help is highly appreciated.
If acid treatment is not enough (maybe because of too low concentration, temperature or soaking time, or all together), a mild oxidation should work, for instance in air. In this case, temperatures higher than 400°C at least will be required, with a suitable air flow. Oxygen should be faster, but with the risk of a too fast (thus not easily controlled) surface gasification and roughening.

I agree with your suggestions because generally everyone claimed they used these methods in their publications. The only problem is no such "evidence" is provided.
Yes, evidence was provided, although I have no reference in mind now. Acid treatment induces a weight increase, sometimes significant, due to oxidation. The surface is much rougher than before. Heat-treatment in oxidizing gas produces weight loss, much lower, but the surface is again not smooth anymore.

What about plasma based techniques? A laser plasma source can be used for structuring of materials increasing surface roughness and possibly keep the chemical properties.

I found your publications on laser plasma source are more on the modification of polymer surface. Therefore, I'm quite skeptical that the same technique can be used for graphite. But I am very interested to know more on this technique. Thank you for your input.
