I'm interested in measuring anxiety in a cohort of male SD rats (~250g). I have read the seminal OF work by Hall and various papers/reviews since but the variety of methods and outcome measures reports has left me at a loss... How do you measure anxiety? Open field, elevated plus, or other? Single or multiple behavior tests? Single or multiple trials/days? Outcome measures? Suggested papers?

Arvind Singh, thank you for your reply. I read the papers you suggested... but I am still unsure the best way to measure "anxiety" in a rat.
1. What is the best test? Open field? Elevated plus? Social interaction test?
2. Meaningful measures/outcomes for anxiety?
3. One type of test? Or combine the results of several tests?
4. Do you test the animal once or several times over a series of days?
