For example, if an engineering project can be done by classmates and the final result goes to someone or a group of people in need, this diverges their attention from obtaining a grade. The pleasure of being useful and competent can perform miracles.
Hence, the focus shifts from a formal lesson to the process of constructing something for the well-being of others.

I don’t think students understand the difference or even care about it for that matter. Besides, in most educational environments, students expect and wait for their teachers to assess their performance and evaluate their progress without thinking that the process can be reciprocal and they too can provide feedback. Even if they do, the feedback is usually oversimplified and not carefully thought over as it happens when students submit some sort of (opinion poll) or answer a questionnaire by the end of the final exams, which they tend to base on how well or bad they do in the exams.
They both refer to feedback given regarding educational process and outcomes. Assessment is usually the feedback given from student to educator. However, evalution is the educator’s feedback to the student.
Assessment is made to identify the level of performance of an individual, whereas evaluation is performed to determine the degree to which goals are attained. The basic difference between assessment and evaluation lies in the orientation, i.e. while the assessment is process-oriented, evaluation is product oriented.

Jinan F. B. Al-Hajaj Thank you for your answer. I am concerned about my students ability to assess their own learning. I have been working with students who are going to become future nurses, teachers and social workers, to name a few. In their future work they will need a confident and strong power of judgement and ability for systematic reflection. Every day my students are challenged to share the answers to questions similar to these: What have you discovered/learned today (name three things)? What did you find hard to understand? What would you like to explore further? The result is deeper learning, reflection and confidence. Also these answers give me a good indication of my own work without the simple oppinion poll simplifications you mention. By judging their own learning process they are also giving me an idea of possible improvements on my part. Even the master students are often suprised to be challenged in this way. They are sometimes even annoyed and would prefer I «do my part of the work». After some discussion and meta-reflections the students do understand the point of this prosess.

I think it is the ultimate hope of almost every competent teacher is to have learners who are capable of critical thinking and in the long run self- assessment. Questions like ’ what have you learned today’ annoy my students as well and make them uncomfortable, suspecting me of “judging“ them. It’s very hard to convince them otherwise and that I am passing no judgment when grades are involved as they must in our profession. I find myself explaining to them rather apologetically that I am grading their performance rather than judging them as good or bad future teachers.

Assessment is a tool to check students' progress whereas evaluation is a tool that helps us to arrive at a decision about students' status after having done a course, a chapter, a session, or what have you.
Assessment is made on the basis of knowing something in little, in quantity and a first hand information whereas evaluation carried out after task is complete, observing all aspects and quality also.

Assessment encompasses quizzes, assignments, projects, student presentations, class activities, midterms and final exams to monitor/assess student performance in relation to the learning outcomes in the three domains of learning. Evaluation is more subjective and comprises "value judgement." It seeks to answer such questions as: how well? how good? etc. Most students rarely know the difference. However, it's a good practice to inform them about the assessment criteria and how they would be evaluated. This transparent process seeks to build motivation and gain their cooperation towards learning.
