I wish to know the amount of carboxyl groups in graphene oxide for a conjugation experiment. Is there any technique like acid base titration? If so can anyone provide a protocol for that?
Boehm titration (widely described in the literature) will give you the amount of each acidic group in units of meq/g. But you need a high enough amount of material for being accurate. FTIR spectroscopy will give you quantitative results as well, examining the intensity of the band at 1735 cm-1 (carbonyl groups) and at 1660 cm-1 (conjugated ketones), but only relatively to a reference. Same remark for Raman spectroscopy.
If you have such an instrument available, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy can be used to give quantitative information on the number of carboxyl groups, see e.g. http://dx.doi.org/10.3762/bjnano.5.12
I found the solution for the quantification of COOH group. Please find the solution in the attached file below. Thank you all for the valuable suggestion.
